Severe chronic constipation is actually one of the worst conditions to deal with, as it can be so painful and uncomfortable. If you are one of the many people out there who is dealing with severe chronic constipation, you should know that you are not alone. There are literally millions of people out there who are suffering with constipation right now and who are therefore in the same position as you.
What it is
To better understand your condition you need to understand about it and what it involves. You are defined as being constipated if you do not have a bowel movement more than three times a week.
Severe chronic constipation is when you continue to get constipated time after time, even after appropriate treatment has been taken. Severe chronic constipation also involves much more pain and often even bleeding during or after a bowel movement.
Medically speaking, severe constipation is defined as less than one bowel movement per week. There is no medical reason to have a bowel movement every day, but you should be going regularly enough that you are not feeling swollen or bloated or having the feeling that you need to go to the bathroom but not being able to.
Treating the Problem
If you are dealing with severe chronic constipation you are going to need to find a constipation remedy, and there are plenty to choose from. Rather than just starting yourself on any constipation treatment, the best idea is going to be for you to get in and see your doctor. They will assess your condition and the first thing that they will be concerned with is making sure that there are no serious health conditions at play here.
This is important because constipation is often a symptom of serious health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and even rectal or colon cancer.
Obviously if there is something major here you will need to deal with that and once you have, your constipation problem should be eliminated as well.
Your doctor will work with you to deal with your constipation, and they will probably start by putting you on some laxatives or stool softeners. These are very easy to take and the best part is that they often work immediately, or at least within a day or so. Just make sure that you do not go overboard and take them too often or your bowel may become dependent.
